Hello everyone! Welcome or welcome back to my Medium blog! Today I am going to talk about Google Poly. Google Poly is a 3d model website by Google. Poly is sadly closing on June 30th, 2021. I am literally writing this post on the 30th to check out the website what is joining the Google Graveyard.

The Models:

I first want to check out some of the 3d models, so you can see what this site had to offer. Take a look at this for example, an incredible moving 3d model of an island.

I can move around to different parts of this island too! Zoom in and out and could download it.

Check out this other model with a cool tunnel going into light. I can move through the tunnel, go around the tunnel, and more! It was so incredible!

You could search so much through the search bar to find a model that you could use!

I searched Google and found this cool Google structure that someone made!

I searched forest and got this incredibly detailed forest that I could move through! I made a gif to download which was customizable!

Below is the GIF that I made! I got to download it, and It is pretty cool! I mean, look at those rays of light!

Why I Poly Shutting Down?

The main reason that Poly is shutting down is that VR popularity is fading. Poly was mostly a VR platform which also had 3d models. I personally loved the 3d models on the platform and have used them before. For example, check out this 3d model of the Google Pixel 1:

If I brought it into Paint 3d, I could position it however I want it. I actually have unreleased blog posts using these models to show how to move your camera. You can do really cool things with them!

Sadly I don’t know of a library as good as Poly for free 3d models! I know that there are other features on the platform like landmarks with a 3d camera and other cool stuff, but that is all that I am going to cover today.

I hope that you enjoyed this short look at Poly. It is going to be a platform that I will miss utilizing. This post is going out today (6/30/21), but I will take a screenshot of the site in a few days to see if it has fully been taken down.
